There are those who, surprisingly, believe that e (2.7182...) is greater than pi (3.1415...). Perhaps they have their reasons? Of course if you accept the (somewhat spurious) argument that pi is approximately 2, then there is no contest! Comments welcome on this issue.
Posted by The Count at April 19, 2004 09:35 PM | TrackBackTop ln(e^10) reasons why e is greater than pi.
# 10) e is easier to spell than pi.
# 9) e ~=2.718281828459045.. while pi merely ~= 3.14 ..
# 8) The character for e can be found on a keyboard, but pi sure can't (unless you use an ancient greek keyboard layout).
# 7) Everybody FIGHTS for their piece of the pi(e), but theres no fighting for pieces of e.
# 6) ln(pi^1) is a really nasty number, but ln(e^1) = 1. (Assuming you are using log base e, rather than log base pi)
# 5) e is used in calculus while pi is used in baby geometry, and rubbish circles.
# 4) 'e' is the most commonly picked vowel in Wheel of Fortune, as well as scrabble.
# 3) e stands for Euler's Number, pi doesn't stand for squat.
# 2) You don't need to know Greek to be able to use e.
# 1) You can't confuse e with a food product, assuming you don't have a diet of pure "e" numbers

In the wake of the recent announcements, scientists all over the globe have surprisingly come forward and confirmed that e (~2.718) is indeed greater than pi (~3.142). The reason giving was demonstrated at a press conference in Washington by using three elastic bands and what was described as 'the smartest guinea pig you\'ll ever see, mate'. Following this demonstration, many engineers expect that Chelsea will continue to underperform for a significant period, but it will clear up in the afternoon if we're lucky.
